AEW and NWA in Legal Battle Over “Shockwave” Trademark Amid National Title Controversy

AEW’s introduction of the National Title on Dynamite didn’t just stir fan debate — it reignited tensions with the NWA, this time spilling into a legal fight. According to Wrestlenomics’ Brandon Thurston, AEW and the NWA are currently battling over ownership of the “Shockwave” trademark.

AEW filed for “AEW Shockwave” in September 2024, while NWA, which previously used “NWA Shockwave” for its YouTube series and live events, filed its own trademark and later opposed AEW’s claim. The NWA argues it has used the name since 2020 and even sent AEW a legal letter demanding the company drop the name. AEW’s attorneys countered that NWA hasn’t used “Shockwave” continuously and that the two marks aren’t confusingly similar.

With both sides digging in, the “Shockwave” dispute remains unresolved — another layer added to the growing tension between AEW and NWA.
