Dave Meltzer Says Tony Khan Reportedly Benches AEW Talent Who May Be Headed to WWE

If you’re planning a jump to WWE, don’t expect much airtime in AEW — especially under Tony Khan. During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed why certain wrestlers, including David Finlay, haven’t appeared on AEW programming despite others in their factions doing so. Meltzer suggested Khan avoids featuring wrestlers he suspects might be leaving for WWE.

“Tony Khan doesn’t want to use people who are going to go to WWE,” Meltzer explained. “If you’re pretty sure they’re gonna go, then why use them?” While Bryan Alvarez argued that Tony could just have them lose on their way out, Meltzer said that only works for wrestlers who are officially under AEW control.

This strategy reportedly protects AEW’s long-term investments but raises questions about fairness — and whether wrestlers are being benched based on speculation rather than fact.
