NJPW Floated Shinsuke Nakamura as Hiroshi Tanahashi’s Possible Retirement Opponent

New Japan Pro Wrestling has reportedly discussed a dream match between Hiroshi Tanahashi and Shinsuke Nakamura for Tanahashi’s eventual retirement. According to internal NJPW conversations, the idea of Nakamura returning for one final Tokyo Dome showdown—possibly at Wrestle Kingdom 2026—was described as more of a “pipe dream” than an active plan.

The biggest hurdle is Nakamura’s WWE status, as many believe he quietly re-signed with the company in 2024. NJPW’s partnerships with AEW and CMLL also complicate matters due to WWE’s alignment with AAA. While fans fueled speculation after Nakamura mimicked Tanahashi’s poses during WWE’s Japan tour, there’s reportedly no deal, no talks, and no real movement—just internal wishful thinking.
