NBCUniversal has pulled Saturday Night’s Main Event from NBC, shifting the show exclusively to Peacock in a major move to protect its WWE streaming audience. Dave Meltzer reported on Wrestling Observer Radio that the strategy was designed to keep fans subscribed to Peacock, even at the cost of losing big TV ratings.
Meltzer explained that NBC used to place WWE on quiet Saturday nights with weak competition but has now chosen streaming exclusivity over network exposure. The change will be especially noticeable on December 13, when John Cena wrestles what’s expected to be his retirement match—viewable only on Peacock instead of NBC, where it could’ve drawn massive mainstream numbers. Meltzer added that WWE isn’t losing financially, since the money from the event is tied into the SmackDown rights package, but viewership will take a clear hit.
