AEW may be pulling solid numbers on paper, but behind the scenes, Dave Meltzer says the company isn’t viewed as “must-have” programming by TV executives. While WWE and UFC are pulling billion-dollar deals, AEW still isn’t considered a sure thing in media rights talks.
Meltzer noted that AEW’s younger audience watches more via streaming than TV, which complicates ratings and ad value. He explained that recent ratings dips weren’t men tuning out, but rather women and the over-50 audience, who were pulled away by competing programs like The Challenge and the Little League World Series.
The concern now is that AEW lacks a strong digital deal, and without one, the next round of TV rights negotiations could put the promotion in a vulnerable position compared to WWE and UFC.
