The AEW Tag Team Titles will be defended in a three-way elimination match at Forbidden Door, but the real story goes beyond the ring. Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter revealed that AEW’s plan was to move the belts to FTR in order to set up a major feud with Adam Copeland and Christian Cage leading into All Out on September 20.
The complication came when current champions Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin refused to lose directly to FTR. AEW then explored two options: booking a three-way match to transition the belts without a direct loss, or running an injury angle with Benjamin. The elimination stipulation was not mentioned on television but was quietly noted on AEW’s social media. If FTR walks out of Forbidden Door with the gold, it will set up one of AEW’s biggest storylines of the year against Copeland and Christian.
