John Cena’s retirement tour almost included another classic battle with AJ Styles, but that’s no longer happening. Billi Bhatti revealed on the Dirty Sheets Wrestling Informer podcast that WWE removed several names from Cena’s potential opponent list. Kevin Owens was sidelined with injury, Adam Copeland (Edge) is with AEW, and AJ Styles has now been scrapped from the plans.
WWE has kept Cena’s farewell run loaded with big matchups, but fans won’t get to see him and Styles run it back one final time. Their rivalry from 2016–2018 remains one of the highlights of Cena’s career, with the two splitting wins in singles action. While Cena vs AJ is off the table, WWE is expected to book Cena vs Brock Lesnar at WrestlePalooza on September 20 — a huge showdown that may have directly pushed Styles out of the retirement tour.
