AEW Set to Unify International and Continental Championships into One Top Title

AEW is moving forward with plans to merge its International and Continental Championships into a single top-tier title, according to Sean Ross Sapp on the June 16 episode of the Fightful Report podcast.

Sapp clarified that the name "Intercontinental Championship" was never considered, as WWE holds the trademark for that title since 2020. AEW reportedly wants to elevate this unified belt as a legitimate secondary top championship rather than a midcard placeholder, continuing the belt’s evolution from its All-Atlantic origins to the current International title.

Sapp also voiced concerns about AEW's habit of having champions carry multiple physical belts, referencing issues seen with ROH’s Triple Crown and Six-Man titles. He hopes AEW will streamline the presentation rather than burden the champion with several belts simultaneously.

As of now, there are no plans to split the unified championship again in the near future. The move signals AEW’s intent to establish a clearly defined secondary title that stands just below the World Championship in importance.
