Dave Meltzer: WWE’s Strategy Isn’t About Winning Weekends—It’s About Wearing AEW Down Over Time

WWE isn’t aiming to crush AEW in a single weekend but rather chip away at its momentum over the long run, says Dave Meltzer.

On Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer explained how WWE stacking events like Saturday Night’s Main Event, NXT Great American Bash, and Evolution against AEW All In: Texas isn’t meant to dominate outright. Instead, it’s part of a “battle of attrition” designed to hold AEW back bit by bit.
Meltzer compared the approach to Vince McMahon’s post-WCW mindset of seeing every competitor as a threat—and noted even WWE President Nick Khan has adopted that philosophy. WWE doesn’t need AEW to fail overnight; they just need them to stop growing.
